April, 2013...
It was a sunny, hot day, typical for Thailand, and my mom decided to go to a coffee shop near our house. She had been sitting their for a few minutes when a lady came up to her, "Excuse me, would any of your daughters want to teach English at our school?"
When my mom came home and asked me if I wanted to teach; my answer was short and straight to the point, "No." That was something my older sister, Annie did. Not me, I was not a teacher. But my parents encouraged me to pray about it and seek God's will.
So over the next two weeks I prayed, hoping God would say no. I didn't want to do it but God said to go. So I did.
My first class was that Tuesday and I asked Kaitlyn to come with me. After all I had only been in a school room twice in my entire life; and now I was supposed to teach in a public school. Kaitlyn agreed, and after the first day we couldn't stop smiling.
I love everything about teaching; I love our students, all 21 of them. I love planning my lessons (we make our own curriculum) I love watching the children learn, I love seeing them on the street and having them wave and smile at us. I love showing them love.
I stepped out in faith. I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't have the qualifications, I was only 15! I wanted to say no; but now I am so grateful that I said yes. God gave me an incredible opportunity to teach and to learn.
So I challenge you, go. One of my favorite quotes is: "God doesn't always call the qualified, but he always qualifies the called." Step out in faith. God can use you, He can give you the gifts. You can be affective where ever you are; whether in America or in Asia. Go and do His will, He'll work out the rest.
